Bethel, Ohio is a village of 2,700 people in Clermont County, Ohio, most notable for being the birthplace of president Ulysses S. Grant. In this profile, Chris Gregory, Project Engineer with Rawdon Myers, Inc., describes how Bethel’s 681 families have benefited from VTScada.
“The Bethel job was small in size (number of tags and PCs, etc.) but important to the village because prior to this, they had no SCADA system. Now they use VTScada to monitor two tanks and a valve pit. The village administrator and maintenance personnel all carry tablets so it was a natural fit for the VTScada Thin Client as well.” Gregory describes.
Hardware – The two tanks and valve pit have SCADApack 100s. The maintenance building (master) is a SCADApack 334. All 4 PLCs have integrated spread spectrum radios. VTScada is running on a panel PC at the maintenance building.
Communications – Operators connect to the VTScada application via a VPN connection. The VPN hardware is a MOXA EDR-810. VPN client software is OpenVPN. They installed the OpenVPN app on their tablets and then utilized cell data to make the VPN connection.
Completed System – “A new elevated tank and pressure valve was being added to the current water system so they felt it was a good time to add a SCADA system. We now monitor level and a few discrete alarms at each tank. The valve at the pit opens and closes based on [SCADA] system pressure set points,“ Gregory says. “The installation began in the fall of 2015 and wrapped in the winter of 2016.”
Future Plans – “The village would benefit from increasing the number of Thin Clients. They currently have one that they share.”
